PowerShell Homework Twelve

By: Steven Aiello

Answer the questions as best as possible in your own words. By answering the question in your own words you will learn more than simply repeating what you’ve heard. You are encouraged to visit the source links in the lessons to do more research on the subject.

Remember the point of the homework is not simply to finish, but to learn!

1. Why did we have to use the Import-Module ServerManager command?

We had to use the Import-Module ServerManager because that module isn’t loaded by default. This is just like importing the Active Directory module. PowerShell will only import selected modules depending on if they are needed or not.

2. Is the way we left our SMTP server in the lesson an acceptable way to configure a production SMTP relay? Why or why not?

NO! This is not an acceptable way to leave a production server. Leaving an SMTP server in this way can lead to the server being used for SPAM on the Internet and your public IP being black listed.

3. What was the command that we used to send e-mail and why is this such a powerful feature of PowerShell?

The command is Send-MailMessage and the reason why it’s so powerful is because it makes it convenient to send e-mail alerts based on what’s going on inside the system. Many monitoring and alerting systems can be tied into e-mail which makes this a very useful tool.

4. What are some free / low cost (legal) ways that you can access a Windows server?

Download the trial version of Windows Server

Join Dream Spark if you’re a student

Or sign up for an Amazon for a virtual private server you can practice on!

5. Did you sign up for DreamSpark if you’re a student? (I know this isn’t really a hard question but I would recommend you do if you can!)
